Dive In: Pools and Beaches

When the temperature rises, take a refreshing dip at one of our local swimming pools – you’ll find great options in Korumburra, Leongatha (YMCA SPLASH), Poowong, Foster, Toora, and Mirboo North, which also features a fun splash park.

Or, if the ocean is calling, discover our coast

  • Waratah Bay and Sandy Point offer safe surf and swimming beaches framed by the majestic mountains of Wilson’s Promontory. Surf lessons are available locally – just drop by a visitor information centre or check online for details.
  • Venus Bay boasts five golden surf beaches, perfect for boarding or a stroll along the clear sands.
  • For calm, family-friendly waters, head to Shallow Inlet near Sandy Point. This secluded spot is ideal for windsurfing, kite surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply splashing about with the kids.
  • Wilsons Promontory beaches are blessed with crystal-like water. Norman Beach is no exception with its shallow and gently lapping water, great for most swimmers. Kids also love splashing around in the shallow, warmer parts of Tidal River.
  • Other water activities such as canoeing and snorkelling can also be enjoyed in South Gippsland.

Patrolled beaches during summer include:

  • Sandy Point
  • Venus Bay
  • Wilson’s Prom (limited times only)

Always swim between the red and yellow flags – lifesavers are only on duty when these are displayed. Volunteer lifesavers patrol beaches on weekends and public holidays from late November to Easter Monday, with additional lifeguard services during peak summer weeks. On cooler days, South Gippsland’s landscapes are perfect for exploring.

  • Enjoy tranquil forest walks in and around Mirboo North including Lyrebird Forest, Baths Road Reserve, and the Grand Ridge Rail Trail.
  • Other shady scenic trails include the Foster Flora Reserves, Mount Worth State Park, Morwell River Falls Walk, Roy Henderson Walk (Sandy Point), and of course, the famous Wilson’s Prom walks.

Family Fun & Community Spirit

Coal Creek in Korumburra is a family favourite – feed the ducks, enjoy a picnic, browse the old general store and immerse yourself in 1870 – 1920 rural life. (Good news: dogs on leashes are welcome too!)

From Friday 5 December to Monday 23 February in the Auditorium Gallery visitors will be treated to Phantom Ride by acclaimed video artist Daniel Crooks. This dual-projection video work with sound, is a mesmerising journey through time and space, featuring footage of the Korumburra railway turntable before its removal and repurposing. The inclusion of this local landmark gives the exhibition a sense of homecoming, making it especially meaningful for our local community.

Meanwhile, the Entry Gallery will showcase ‘Swamp Crimes and Other Stories‘ by Heather Shimmen, a compelling exhibition that blurs the lines between history and imagination. Shimmen’s intricate prints are built from layers of obsessively collected images, memories, and objects. Her work challenges dominant historical narratives, weaving fantastical stories that evoke other worlds and invite viewers to explore new relationships between seemingly distant ideas.
