About the artwork
Outside In is a listening space whose proportions take their cue from the monumental girth of a Strzelecki Gum. Its geometric form draws on elements of the built landscape. Rather than representing the tree directly, the work holds an impression of its presence – a memory translated into form.
Sound brings elements of the surrounding landscape inside through the storm-fallen timber. The soundscape has been produced from recordings and investigations gathered on and around the site, weaving together traces of the landscape – ecological, geological, remembered and imagined. Nearby listening cones offer a direct encounter with the changing sounds of the site.
