A picturesque township nestled among the towering gum trees and fertile farmland.
Mirboo North is a historic and picturesque township in the heart of the Strzelecki Ranges. Nestled amongst towering gums and fertile farmland, Mirboo North marks the halfway point on the magnificent Grand Ridge Road. A traditional country town, Mirboo North is surrounded by impressive rural panoramas and adorned with native flora, including its emblem, the lily.
Beautiful street murals capture the spirit of the town’s early days, whilst the extensive Baromi Park offers a centrally located playground, skate bowl and BBQ facilities.
Things to see and do
Mirboo North is located approximately 156 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. It is accessible by road from either the South Gippsland Highway via Leongatha and onto the Strzelecki Highway, or the Princes Highway with access from Trafalgar or Morwell. Alternatively, you can take the spectacular Grand Ridge Road from either Warragul or Traralgon.
In 1885, a railway line from Morwell was established to what was then a tiny settlement known successively as Mirboo, Mirboo North and Baromi. The arrival of the railway prompted an increase in town development with forest areas cleared and buildings erected. In 1894, the Shire of Mirboo was officially formed, covering an area of approximately 24,624 hectares (95 square miles) of rolling hillside. This Shire was the smallest in Victoria prior to amalgamation. Mirboo North now forms part of the South Gippsland Shire. The name ‘Mirboo’ is aboriginal for kidney.
One special event to take place at Mirboo North was the visit by 10 officers and 90 sailors of the American Fleet in 1908 as part of their around the world deployment. They left Williamstown at 7.05am by train and arrived at North Mirboo at 12.25pm for a day visit. A large reception awaited them on arrival and a grand meal was provided in a large marquee. The small township exploded for the day with many visitors arriving from surrounding areas. After lunch, the sailors took part in a sports afternoon of tug-o-war, running races and demonstrations with everyone having a wonderful day. Mirboo North was very privileged to have this visit as, traditionally, the fleet only visited large towns such as Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong.
