The Short-beaked Echidna, also known as the common Echidna, is one of the earths oldest mammals. You will spot them wandering through local bushland, forests and grassy pastures, especially in spring and early summer as they search for food and mates.
They have dark fur beneath their sharp spines and a beak with a good sense of smell to search for food. They use their short limbs with sharp claws to dig and their long, sticky tongue to hunt for ants and termites.
Echidnas lay eggs and then feed their young milk from their pouch.
Baby Echidnas are called puggles.
