Yanakie is the gateway to Wilsons Promontory National Park – the settlement closest to the park gate.

Accommodation in the vicinity includes B&Bs, self-contained cottages and caravan parks. Yanakie village offers a licensed general store.

The beaches at nearby Corner Inlet and Shallow Inlet are only a few minutes drive from Yanakie and are located on either side of the peninsula. Not only are they top fishing spots, but they are also great for swimming, bird watching, bush walking, photography or simply admiring the unspoilt spectacular scenery of this southern coast area.

Yanakie township has a picnic area with free electric undercover BBQ with children’s playground and public toilets.

There are tennis courts for hire, a hall and settlers hut available for hire, licensed general store with groceries, coffee, some takeaway food and petrol with public telephone and picnic tables in front.

20 years ago there were approximately 10 tourist beds available. Now there is approximately 440, Yanakie is the fastest growing tourism location in South Gippsland.

Location

Yanakie is located 186 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, around 2.5 hours along the South Gippsland Highway. Turn off at Meeniyan and travel through Fish Creek or continue though via Foster. Yanakie is approximately 25 kilometres from Foster or Fish Creek.

The gate to Wilsons Promontory is located just a few kilometres past Yanakie. It is then a further 25 minutes to reach Tidal River.

Note: Local wildlife (wombats, kangaroos, wallabies) are often seen on the roadside, be sure to drive slower at dusk and dawn to avoid collision.

History

– First settled in 1850, the Yanakie district, including what is now the Wilsons Promontory National Park was used to graze cattle and sheep.

– In 1905 the National Park was declared, and the remaining area has developed into a prosperous and friendly farming community and, more recently, a popular destination for tourists.

Walks in and around Yanakie

– Corner Inlet Marine and Coastal Park
Start at the Yanakie Landing Circuit picnic area and car park on Foley Road. Proceed to the boat launching ramp at Corner Inlet and pick up the sea shore walk to Duck Point and beyond to the Coastal Park.

– Shallow Inlet Marine and Coastal Park
Commence from car park at Hourigans Camp Lane (off Millar Road, Yanakie). Proceed on foot through the Coastal Park to the sea at Shallow Inlet. You can then head along the inlet Northwards and beyond.
